Rottnest Island Management Plans

The Rottnest Island Management Plan 2003-2008 was released to the community by the Minister for Tourism, the Hon. Clive Brown, on Thursday 27 March 2003.

In accordance with the Rottnest Island Authority Act 1987, the Rottnest Island Authority (the Authority) is required to have a five-year Management Plan in place to guide the management direction of the Island for that period of time.

The Plan covers all aspects of Rottnest Island operations, including visitor services, facilities and the conservation of the Island's environment and heritage.

Following the release of a Draft Management Plan in June 2002, the Western Australian community had a three-month period to have their say on recommendations contained in the document.

Copies of the Draft Management Plan were circulated to relevant interest groups, government departments, and available to the community in hard copy or on the internet. Public meetings were also held during the consultation phase to clarify issues and generate further awareness, and many other meetings were held with special interest groups.

At the close of the community consultation period, the Authority received more than 700 submissions from community and interest groups and individuals, and debate on issues such as proposed marine management zones, the management of moorings, accommodation and the marine environment was strong. The Authority would like to thank all individuals and groups who provided feedback on the Draft Plan.

The Rottnest Island Management Plan 2003-2008 is available to view or download here. Hard copies of the Management Plan can also be purchased from the Authority's Fremantle Office at a cost of $33.00, and a CD copy of the Plan can be purchased for $3.30 (postage and handling charges may apply).

You can email reception@rottnest.wa.gov.au and request to purchase either a hard copy or CD, telephone (08) 9432 9300, or visit the Rottnest Island Authority's Administration Office at:

Recommendations contained within the Management Plan will be progressively implemented over the coming five years.

Rottnest Island Management Plan Amendment 2007

The Rottnest Island Authority recommended amendments to the Rottnest Island Management Plan 2003-2008 (RIMP).  These amendments relate to zoning changes in the area known as the old Tearooms site (Central Thomson Bay) and at Mt Herschel. The amendments effect a resolution between the RIMP and the 2004 Rottnest Taskforce recommendations, which have been implemented by the RIA under the direction of the Minister for Tourism.

The Rottnest Island Authority conducted a formal process following the procedure laid out in the Rottnest Island Authority Act 1987. The amendments were released for a two-month public consultation period. The RIA received over 200 submissions from individuals and organisations.

The submissions were analysed and the issues raised were taken into account in formulating recommendations. This resulted in some changes in the wording of the amendments relating to the Services and Operations zoning of Mt Herschel to provide areas for services and operations, and for accommodation.

The amendments were Gazetted on 8 May 2007 without further change.
