About the Rottnest Island accommodation ballot

The Rottnest Island ballot system for accommodation allows all visitors an equal chance of reserving holiday units during popular periods, such as the Western Australian (WA) school holidays.

During the summer school holidays after Christmas and Easter (first term) school holidays, accommodation is only available for set periods and must be reserved through the Rottnest Island ballot system. The second term (July) and the third term (September) holidays are not subject to a ballot.

A ballot is also held for the WA high school post-graduation celebration period known as Leavers Week.  Accommodation on Rottnest during this period is limited to students graduating from Year 12 of high school in Western Australia. For more details, check out the Rottnest Island leavers information section.

Dates for the 2009/2010 Rottnest Island ballot for accommodation are as follows:

  • Easter ballot begins on the last Wednesday in October and is open for 21 days.
  • Summer ballot starts on the last Wednesday in June and is open for 21 days.
  • Leavers ballot begins on the last Wednesday of August and is open for seven days.

For all the school term dates, please visit the Department of Education and Training website.

Ballot process

Using an automated random computer selection process, allocation is based on where your application is situated in the randomised queue and the remaining available accommodation that matches your preferences.

Important ballot information

Only one ballot application per household is to be lodged and duplicate applications will be cancelled. To maximise your chance of obtaining a suitable allocation the accommodation form must be read very carefully, filled out correctly and submitted by the closing date.

Individuals with mobility impairment must lodge their Rottnest Island accommodation ballot application and provide an accompanying letter advising the special facilities they require. This information must also be received by the closing date.

Please call Central Reservations on 1800 111 111 (within WA only) or +61 8 9432 9111 for further information about the Rottnest Island ballot for accommodation.
