Rottnest
Island is an increasingly popular destination for weddings and receptions. With Anglican and Catholic Churches on the Island, as well as an array of beautiful outdoor locations at which to celebrate a ceremony, Rottnest is in high demand from September to April as a wedding venue.
A permit is required if you are conducting your ceremony or a photo session in any location apart from the Rottnest Chapel, Holy Trinity Church or licensed venue.
Approval for the consumption of alcohol outside licensed premises must also be obtained from the RIA and will be granted for a maximum of two hours at an approved location. If you would like a celebratory toast following your wedding ceremony or during the photo session, please include these details in your wedding application.
Please submit the wedding application form at least four weeks prior to your wedding to allow approval to be granted.
The processing of your permit will allow the Rottnest Island Authority to inform you of any other activities planned for the locations that you have chosen, and also ensures that adequate provision is made to meet public health, safety and environmental requirements for Rottnest Island.
Rottnest Chapel
The historical Rottnest Chapel provides a unique backdrop for your wedding ceremony. Built in 1858, the chapel features white-washed walls and a stained glass window, and has capacity for 40 people. The Rottnest Chapel is located centrally in the Thomson Bay settlement, adjacent to the Rottnest Lodge. The Anglican Minister on the Island, David Prescott can be contacted on (08) 9384 9281 or email dumiya@iinet.net.au. Download the brochure on marrying in the Rottnest Chapel (chapel_guide.pdf).
Holy Trinity Catholic Church
The Holy Trinity Catholic Church, on top of a hill adjacent to the main bus stop in the Thomson Bay settlement, was built in 1975. With a light and airy atmosphere, the church has a capacity of 100 people, with provision for larger groups when the full length doors on each side are opened into the secluded courtyard. A bequest made possible a chime of eightbells to replace the original single bell house in the tower. The chime consists of a musical octave and simple tunes can be played. These bells are popular at the ceremonies.
