Perth boasts the highest per capita boat ownership in Australia, so it is little wonder that nearly one third of all Rottnest visitors give the ferries a miss and venture to the Island by private craft.
And while getting to Rottnest on your own boat is heaps of fun, it also carries a certain element of risk.
Luckily, these risks are kept to a minimum thanks to a group of dedicated boat enthusiasts who volunteer their time to man a 24-hour emergency radio service and a fleet of three rescue vessels!
The Fremantle Volunteer Rescue Group has been offering this amazing service for over 30 years and in one year alone they were called out 505 times and rescued 1537 people! Problems in that year included everything from a flat battery to sinking boats, fires and missing divers.
The Group works with the Water Police on all emergency situations, along with the Rottnest Ranger Service, the Nursing Post and Rottnest Police.
