The Rottnest Offshore Boardriders Club was established in May 1988, when a group of local board riders decided that due to the number of resident surfers on Rottnest, potential existed to form an active club.
In the last 14 years, the Offshore Boardriders have accomplished many tasks including the rehabilitation of Strickland Bay which required major work due to degradation from the number of people who had been accessing the area from different tracks and pathways over many years.
This project included the construction of fencing and pathways, working in consultation with the Rottnest Island Authority's Environment Staff.
The Offshore Boardriders also participate in Clean Up Australia Day and have become an integral part of the Rottnest Community with continued support of fundraising and social events, while in the early years of its formation, the Club even took School photographs!
Strickland Bay is an isolated Surf Break and though ranked in the top 50 Breaks in the World, it is without a communication system for reporting injuries, so the next goal of the Offshore Boardriders to raise funds to install an appropriate system. This will be done in collaboration with the Rottnest Police and Nursing Post.
Another upcoming project for the Boardriders is the promotion of the Butt Bins initiative on Rottnest, which aims to encourage smokers to use Butt Bins, made of recycled film canisters, to dispose of their cigarette butts so as to avoid polluting the Island environment.
