Boating

The island seems like its own self-contained world, but just like the rest of Western Australia, there are rules and regulations that keep everything running smoothly. The boating guidelines  are an essential place to start before you arrive, as they detail useful information like insurance requirements, speed limits, boating-prohibited areas, and notes on acceptable island behaviour.

Respecting the environment

It’s especially important for people arriving on their own boats to understand the unique and delicate ecosystem they are entering into. Wadjemup / Rottnest Island is dotted with marine reserves, which protect the abundance of sea life beneath your boat, including long-nosed fur seals, dolphins, and over 400 species of fish. Visitors need to be aware of where they can go, where fishing is allowed, and how to safely dispose of waste.

The island admission fee

Every visitor to Rottnest Island needs to pay a compulsory admission fee. This contribution helps keep the island running, preserving the experiences you understand to be Rottnest Island.

Make sure the weather is on your side

When you’re travelling to or around the island by boat, it’s important to be mindful of weather conditions and understand that they can change quickly. Keep up to date the current weather warnings by checking the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) website regularly.
