The Rottnest Society

The Rottnest Society is dedicated group of tree planters and conservationists who annually visit Rottnest Island to assist the RIA with its woodland restoration program.

Recruiting from its membership and Murdoch University, the Society has undertakes 2 planting and 1 weeding weekend each year with up to 45 volunteers each time. During times of unseasonal late rain, the Society has turned its skills to other important environmental works like tree guard and fence removal, restoration of wetlands and weeding.

The Society’s dedicated members and friends have planted more than 128 000 trees, and helped to control the spread of sea spurge along Rottnest’s beautiful beaches. Sea spurge is a noxious weed that has infested many of Perth’s beaches. The milky sap from  this plant  causes severe irritation and possible blindness if gets into your eyes.

Through its regular on-ground work the Society is helping in a practical way to rehabilitate the natural environment and helping to increase the community’s understanding of the Island’s fragile ecosystems.
