Frequently Asked Questions
What type of volunteering activities can I participate in?
The Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) coordinates a wide variety of activities and events as part of an annual volunteering works program. Activities include environmental works such as construction, rehabilitation, fauna monitoring and conservation restoration projects. There are also volunteers that conduct daily tours to visitors as part of improving the visitor experience, understanding and enjoyment of the Island.
How can I become a volunteer on Rottnest Island?
The Rottnest Island Authority rarely selects volunteers for projects, but rather engages the assistance of partner volunteer groups to assist in achieving environmental, conservation and recreational outcomes. These groups include, but are not limited to the Rottnest Voluntary Guides Association, the Rottnest Foundation, Rottnest Society, The Winnit Club, Conservation Volunteers Australia and more.
Many of these groups accept new members who can then take part in scheduled Island activities. If you would like to join any of these groups and participate in any upcoming voluntary events, please see our upcoming volunteer events
and independent volunteer groups
sections for further information.
How do I become a voluntary tour guide?
The Rottnest Voluntary Guides Association Inc (RVGA) was established in 1986 to promote an increased awareness of the natural environment and historical significance of Rottnest. The RVGA conducts a variety of daily tours on the Island.
If you would like to join the RVGA and train as a voluntary guide, details can be obtained form the RVGA website
Are there any internship/work experience programs I can be involved in on Rottnest Island, and how do I apply?
If you wish to participate in internship/ work experience work, please email your enquiry to Rottnest Island Authority and it will be passed onto the appropriate department. We cannot guarantee positions are available. All advertised positions will be posted on http://www.jobs.wa.gov.au/.
Are there any opportunities for my company or community group to participate in on the Island?
Groups looking to engage in community service while visiting Rottnest Island are encouraged to participate in beach clean ups. Beach clean up kits
can be borrowed from the Rottnest Island Authority, and are designed to contribute data to the Tangaroa Blue Foundation's Australian Marine Debris Initiative. Each kit contains a clipboard, data sheets, rubbish bags, 20 sets of gloves and a marine debris identification manual. Clean ups take around 1½ hours to complete.
