About Rottnest Island Authority
Rottnest Island is a Class A Reserve governed by the Rottnest Island Authority Act, 1987 (the Act) which establishes the Rottnest Island Authority as a statutory body to control and manage the Island, reporting to the Minister for Tourism.
The Act gives the Authority the power to control and manage the Island for the following purposes:
- to provide and operate recreational and holiday facilities on the Island;
- to protect the flora and fauna of the Island; and
- to maintain and protect the natural environment and the man-made resources of the Island and, to the extent that the Authority’s resources allow, repair its natural environment.
Paolo Amaranti has been CEO of the Rottnest Island Authority since 2004.
With more than 25 years’ experience in strategic management, with particular expertise in the tourism, international trade and education services sectors.
Paolo has held senior Executive Director positions with the Department of Industrial Development, Department of Commerce and Trade, and the Western Australian Tourism Commission.
Previous career experiences include Audit Manager with Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Corporate Investigator with the Corporate Affairs Office and Director of Euro Sports International, a sporting retailer / wholesaler then agent for ‘Diadora’.
Paolo is responsible for contributing with the Board to the setting of the strategic direction for Rottnest Island, guiding the development of a number of major tourism related plans on Rottnest Island and leading the Agency in the operational implementation of the current and future Rottnest Island Management Plans.
Success in the implementation of these plans has seen an unprecedented number of awards and accolades for Rottnest Island and its team.
These have included recognition at State level as the best managed major tourism attraction in 2011 and 2012, Tourism Australia National Tourism Marketing Award in 2013 and the Pacific Asia Travel Association Gold Awards in 2013 for Eco-tourism, Marketing and Cultural Heritage.
Paolo is Chairman of the Rottnest Island Emergency Management Committee, a current Board member of the Pacific Asia Tourism Association and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Previous roles have included being an Executive Director of Perth Education City, member of Sports International WA, Experience Perth and Olympics Business Club Australia.
The daily operations of the Rottnest Island Authority are overseen by the Chief Executive Officer, supported by a staff of approximately 117 people. The RIA's operations are based both on Rottnest Island and in the Administration Office at Level 1, E Shed, Victoria Quay Fremantle WA 6160.
Board of management
The Board of the Rottnest Island Authority consists of a Chair, appointed by the Governor on the nomination of the Minister for Tourism, and five other members appointed in the same manner. Members are appointed so that not less than one member is:
- A person experienced in conserving the environment
- A person experienced in preserving buildings of historic value
- A person with sound commercial experience, and
- A person who is a regular user of the Island for recreational purposes
- Members are appointed for a term not exceeding three years, but from time to time, may be re-appointed. The Minister also appoints a member to be Deputy Chairman.
