Built in the 1920s, the Bungalows provide a simple and relaxing experience of Rottnest Island. Being the original holiday accommodation available on the Island, the Bungalows have canvas sides and are most suited for summer use. Shower rooms and toilets have been added with due consideration to the important heritage background of the accommodation which is very different to the style of building usually associated with the term. The bungalows are self-contained with a fully equipped kitchen and basic furnishings including lounge sofa, heater, linen, cutlery, crockery & gas BBQ. . Please note that the beds are not made up on arrival. Televisions are not provided and cannot be hired due to the absence of reception. Chalet 450 is the only chalet on Rottnest Island.

Cosy, cedar-clad cabins located in a shaded area within in the main settlement. Each cabin accommodates a maximum of 6 people in 1 double bed and 2 sets of bunks. Cabins have a kitchenette (with microwave/electric combination oven and fridge), combined with living and sleeping area and a separate shower room and toilet. Communal BBQs and rugged landscape are at your doorstep and this is a great way to experience Rottnest Island.

Please note - Blankets and pillows are provided and other linen may be hired at least 48 hours prior to arrival. Televisions are not offered in the cabins and lack of reception means that they are not available for hire.

Rottnest Island is an A Class reserve with one designated camping area conveniently located in the main settlement. Renovated in 2013, it has 43 non-powered sand covered sites with newly constructed ablution blocks (with wheelchair access) and camp kitchen with 4 BBQ plates and troughs. In addition there are 2 further free standing BBQs.

The new facility offers the following:

• 43 sites accommodating up to a maximum of 6 people and 2 tents
• Newly constructed ablution block with wheelchair access
• Newly constructed camp kitchen with cooking facilities
• Separate free standing BBQs
• Complimentary delivery of luggage direct from the main Jetty to the Camping Ground if correctly labelled with labels provided by the ferry operator.

Please note -

  • No alcohol will be delivered to the Camping Ground and open flames not permitted.
  • Visitors found camping outside the Camping Ground are at risk of receiving an infringement from the Rottnest Island Rangers.
  • A maximum of 2 sites can be booked in one transaction. Each site accommodates up to a maximum of 6 people in up to 2 tents and each site must have one over 18 year old registered guest.
  • Charges for the Camping Ground are calculated on a per person basis for arrivals on or before 30 June 2014 . Please enter the number of adults and children (4yrs - 12yrs) when booking your site.
  • Bookings arriving on or after 1 July 2014 will incur a flat fixed rate up to a maximum of 6 people.
  • On reaching Rottnest, the person who has made the booking for the site must report to the Visitor Centre with photo ID in order to register. A sticker will be provided which should be attached to the tent to confirm registration. All tents must be situated within the area of the site booked.

Governor's Circle

Originally built for soldiers during WWII, including a former military hospital and Sergeants Mess, Governors Circle Cottages are perfect for schools and other groups. There are nine charming, self-contained cottages, each comprising of 9, 13 or 18 (no TV) bed configurations, mainly in bunks. The larger cottage is access friendly with wheelchair ramps in place. Please be aware no linen or bath towels are supplied. All these items are available for hire by contacting Rottnest Island Reservations prior to your arrival. Please note that a credit card pre-authorisation of $500 will be required on check-in.

Kingstown Barracks

Kingstown is located 1km south of the Thomson Bay Main Jetty and was a focal point in Rottnest Islands WWII operations as it housed the Australian Army during wartime operations. Kingstown Barracks accommodation was opened for educational use in 1984/1985 and has become a much loved camp destination for many WA schools.

Please Note: Consumption of alcohol is not permitted within the dorms, hostel or grounds of Kingstown Barracks. Alcohol will not be delivered to Kingstown Barracks by the luggage crew.

Kingstown Barracks

The former army barracks at Kingstown features 17 dormitory rooms, ideal for school and other groups. Some rooms have private ablutions and wheelchair facilities. Communal ablution facilities are available. Please check with Visitor Centre for opening times. Please be aware no linen or bath towels are provided. All these items are available for hire by contacting Rottnest Island Reservations prior to your arrival.

Kingstown Barracks houses the Rottnest Island Environmental Education Centre, an education and accommodation venue for schools, community groups and the general public. Some rooms cater for disabled guests. The Barracks is restricted to groups where participants are under 18 years with the exception of the period from mid December to mid February when all are welcome. Bookings for the dormitories cannot be made online.


The Rottnest Island Hostel is a great low budget option for guests just wanting a place to rest their head. The hostel has 50 beds (including family rooms and dormitories), a fully equipped kitchen and a lounge with television. Communal ablution facilities are available.

Hostel beds are supplied with bed linen but guests will need to bring their own towels or hire them by contacting Rottnest Island Reservations prior to your arrival.
