Pilot Boathouse

A striking display of Rottnest's maritime history, featuring a replica pilot boat and historical photographs.

A secure boathouse, established in 1846, was the first building constructed on Rottnest Island for the pilot service. It was built at the northern end of the seawall. The pilot’s task was to guide ships safely though the reefs around the Island to Fremantle Harbour.

Six years later, quarters for the pilot crew were added to the top of the boathouse and in 1859 another boathouse was built, to house an additional pilot boat. The last pilot left in 1903, ending more than 57 years of piloting on the Island.

Replicas of the pilot boats and historical photographs are now on display in the 1859 boathouse, which is located in the seawall east of the Visitor Centre.

Opening Hours:

Daily from 1pm – 3pm.

Wadjemup & Bathurst Lighthouses

There are two lighthouses situated on Rottnest Island.

Wadjemup Lighthouse

Constructed in 1896, Wadjemup Lighthouse stands at the highest point of Rottnest Island, offering visitors a fantastic view of Perth City on the distant mainland. At approximately 38 metres, it is the fourth tallest lighthouse in Australia and replaced the original 20 metre structure built in 1849.

While the lighthouse itself is closed to visitors, this scenic spot is well worth a visit. Three other buildings in the Wadjemup precinct, including the Signal Station, the Battery Observation Post and the Women's Royal Australian Navy Service, are also intact and linked by self-guided interpretive signage.

Located at the centre of the island, you can get to the Wadjemup Lighthouse by bike (a 15-minute ride from the Settlement), by bus tour, shuttle bus, or by foot via the Wadjemup Bidi walk trail.

Bathurst Lighthouse

Bathurst Lighthouse, on the northern edge of Rottnest Island, was built in 1900 to support Wadjemup Lighthouse following the City of York shipping disaster in 1899, where 11 lives were lost. It is 20 metres high and in conjunction with Wadjemup and the Fremantle Lighthouse, creates a navigational triangle to guide skippers.

The reef structure surrounding Rottnest Island meant that the construction of two lighthouses was essential to assist vessels to navigate the channel between Fremantle and the Island.

While the lighthouse itself runs automatically and is closed to visitors, it is located at one of the highest points on the island with breathtaking views on offer, including the famous sunsets of Pinky Beach.
