Stormy clouds over the island landscape

Accept the island’s invitation to embrace the elements. Scattered showers or soft sprinklings over Wadjemup / Rottnest Island set the scene for a tranquil time away together.

Occasional winter rains illuminate the landscape, from sky to sea. When they do arrive, deep grey skies turn violet, signalling an impressive downpour, and sunsets blaze in warming hues that contrast cool temperatures. Meanwhile, the waters of bays and beaches transform throughout the day, reflecting the ever-changing skies above.

When rain clouds roll around, these rainy-day attractions are the perfect match for winter weather on Rottnest Island.

Hike along dewy green trails

Don your waterproof gear and ignite a sense of rejuvenation along one of the five winding Wadjemup Bidi trails. Hiking in the rain connects you to nature like nothing else. Fall into a rhythmic pace alongside your loved one; invigorated by cool winter air and fresh scents released during the rain. You may also be joined by native creatures, with winter activity increasing sightings of fur and feathers, and sounds of croaks and chirps.

Join The Hike Collective for a guided excursion along one of the five unique tracks. Or enjoy a self-guided hike along scenic stretches like the Gabbi Karniny Bidi, a 9.5 km loop that winds its way through the island’s salt lake system, and the Wardan Nara Bidi which encompasses the rugged southern coastline. No matter which trail you wander, memories of a shared journey are sure to stay with you long after returning to the mainland.

Ride in the rain

Part of the island’s unique charm is the lack of vehicles, making it the ideal place to cycle — even in the rain. Throw on a rain jacket and cycle between showers or glide during gentle misting. Those with an adventurous streak will relish a ride through the rain, complete with salt-tinged cheeks and shared laughter along the way.

You’ll be rewarded for your efforts with long stretches of empty road, memorable views of a windswept coastline, and an all-out invigorating ride that invokes all your senses — mist-kissed skin and all.

See the sights in comfort

On rare occasions when the rain refuses to ease, bus tours are ideal to see the sights of the island while staying dry. Pick two cosy seats next to one another and settle in for the journey as rain trickles down the glass.

Choose from a 90-minute tour aboard the Discover Rottnest bus tour, and remember to pack your wet weather gear! This tour takes you to the rugged vantage point of the island: the West End, which is at its most impressive during the winter months. Hop out here and explore the dramatic coastline, where migrating maamoong (whales) and manyil (long-nosed fur seals) dance in the waves during this special time of year. Alternatively, opt for a Quokka Coaches bus tour. The Bayseeker Island tour includes stops at Wadjemup Lighthouse and Mabel Cove, offering glimpses into the island’s history and stunning landscape views.

You can also explore at your own pace with the Quokka Coaches Island Explorer hop-on-hop-off bus. With 19 different stops around the island, disembark at your leisure as the weather eases. Whether that be onto the chilly sands of an inky-blue bay, or towards the tantalising scent of piping hot toasties from one of two island caravans.

Pause indoors

Rainy days are the perfect excuse to take pause and spend time together in your accommodation. Wrap yourselves up in soft blankets, with routine sips of wine sending warmth to exposed fingers and cheeks. Pick a nook near the window and let your gaze stretch out towards the evolving scenery beyond the rain-speckled glass. Here, there’s nowhere else to be other than the present moment with each other.

Indulge in the finer things

When hunger rumblings announce themselves, head out to another cosy enclave. For food from a climate that contrasts the winter forecast, visit the newly opened Sunsets Rottnest. Here, warming Mediterranean meals and a relaxed atmosphere are on the menu. Dine indoors by the fireplace, or outside (depending on the whims of the winter sun). Craving zingy flavours? Reserve a table for two at Lontara, where the food is inspired by the islands of South East Asia. Here, artfully spiced dishes are designed for sharing, and known for warming tastebuds to toes.

Secure oceanside seating at Isola Bar e Cibo and watch the rain slip below the surface of Thomson Bay. Freshly grilled seafood and handmade pasta ignite the senses at this Italian-inspired beachside bar.

Catch a movie

As rain gently drums on the roof of the historic Picture Hall, settle in for a few hours in another world. Latest flicks and old school favourites play on the big screen while you relax in laidback deckchairs. Simply arrive at Rottnest Movies & Mini Golf and secure seats for any film that takes your fancy. Fresh buttered popcorn and other treats are available from the quaint candy bar to complete your cinematic experience.

Rediscover old-school arcade fun

Slip out of the cover of grey skies and in front of dazzling arcade lights at Rottnest Movies & Mini Golf. This destination is a covered indoor attraction for all ages. Whether you’ve got time to unwind before your movie starts, or you just want to walk down memory lane, there’s good times to be had. Pull pinballs, shoot hoops and play video games to your heart’s content.

Engage in history

Welcome the rainy-day interlude and experience the other side of Wadjemup’s wonder: its chapter in history. Catch a ride on the Captain Hussey historical train to Oliver Hill, enjoying the smell of salty air and glimpses of glistening greenery along the way. If the weather is too wet or windy, Quokka Coaches Grand Island bus tour will get you there in comfort. At Oliver Hill, gain a unique insight into the island’s important role during wartime. Home to a battery of 9.2-inch naval guns built to defend Fremantle Port, the fort echoes a rich history.

Venture underground on a guided tour, offering respite from heavy rain and a unique perspective of the island. Marvel at the collection of tunnels burrowed into the sandy bluff which were once an arsenal for ammunition.

When you're back in the main settlement, carry on to Wadjemup Museum where exhibits dating as far back as 40,000 years hold special significance. Upon leaving the museum, continue your winter wanderings with a renewed respect for the land you’re visiting.
